In Honorarium: Countryside has been blessed to win many awards this year. We are deeply humbled by these honors. In the face of a devastating tragedy, the loss of Dr. Cindie Davis Holub, these awards have shined a bright light for us at a time when a very bright light, Cindie, was not there to join us in celebration of these accolades. We dedicate these awards to Dr. Cindie Davis Holub, an amazing woman who was the greatest gift to her family and her community. |

Canine Influenza:
Countryside, is following the recommendation of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), which encourages veterinary hospitals to recommend that dog owners in the United States strongly consider the canine influenza vaccine for their pets, to prevent a major outbreak in other areas of the country and to protect all dogs from this potentially deadly virus. A first dose in a dog's lifetime requires a second dose 2 to 4 weeks later. A dog then receives one vaccine per year thereafter. To help encourage pet owners to vaccinate their pets against this virus that has become an endemic in 4 states (NJ, PA, CO, FL) in the U.S., (for current Countryside patients that have received a yearly health physical examination at Countryside within the past year), Countryside is limiting the cost of this service to the vaccine itself and is not charging an office visit fee associated with the vaccination. Costs associated with treating a pet that has become ill from canine influenza can run into the thousands of dollars. Like some human flu vaccines, canine influenza vaccine does not guarantee a dog will not get the virus, but studies show if a vaccinated dog does become infected with the virus, the vaccine can significantly reduce the symptoms associated with infection. To learn more about canine influenza and to make an informed decision if canine influenza vaccine is right for your dog, click here to visit the AVMA's website. For information about the vaccination and other important CIV facts click here.
As of May 1, 2010, for the safety of all pets in our care, Countryside will require the CIV vaccination for all dogs boarding, in playgroup, attending obedience classes, or spending time in the grooming parlor at our practice. |

Laparoscopic Spay:
Countryside is one of the first general practices in Massachusetts to offer minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures! On-site laparoscopic services now available in 2010 for spays and gastropexy!
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique for viewing the internal structures of the abdomen. A laparoscope (camera) inserted through a small incision in the abdomen magnifies internal structures of the abdomen on a TV monitor for a more thorough examination. Additional small incisions are made to facilitate the use of surgical instruments. The most common application of laparoscopy is biopsy. In recent years, laparoscopy has been adopted as a less traumatic and less painful alternative to traditional spays.
In a traditional spay a 2" to 3" or larger incision is made in the abdomen through winch the ovarian ligament is blindly torn from the abdominal wall. THis tearing may cause bruising and postoperative pain. Traditional spays require significant tension on the ovaries and uterus which may cause trauma and bleeding.
When performing a laparoscopic spay, the procedure is done through two or three tiny incisions in the abdomen, typically 3/16" in size. The procedure is performed with magnified views of the organs allowing for greater precision. The ovarian ligament is carefully cut and cauterized, rather than torn. Laparoscopic spays offer patients up to 65% less pain, minimal recovery time and less trauma than traditional spays.
When scheduling your dog's spay, laparoscopy can be included for a minimal fee. Your pet will experience less post operative pain and have smaller incisions that reduce recovery time. Gastropexy (a preventative surgery in at risk dogs that prevents the twisting of the stomach {bloat} which is fatal if not treated quickly) can also be performed at the time of the spay.
Countryside has also offered for many years endoscopy procedures such as gastrointestinal flexible endoscopy, otoscopy and vaginoscopy.

You may not be able to plan when your pet gets sick, but you can have a financial plan for what to do if your pet gets sick.
During these uncertain economic times it’s understandable that all of us are tightening our belts and looking for ways to save money. Pet insurance can help you manage the cost of caring for your pet through good times and bad.
Here at Countryside Veterinary Hospital we strongly encourage you to get pet health insurance for your pet. We’ve seen too many pets receive less than the best care simply because people cannot afford it. Click here to read more... |

Heartworm, Intestinal Parasite, and Flea & Tick Prevention: Though winter weather is upon us, now is not the time to stop giving heartworm, intestinal parasite, and flea & tick preventatives. Check your home supply to see if you are running low or out of product. Your pet needs to be protected from fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites and heartworm disease all year long. If your pet is not on any preventatives, or if you are low on supply, please contact our office. We can help you choose the best products for your pet. Remember, heartworm disease is a very real threat to your pet, and has no immediate symptoms. Please don't ignore the importance of good preventatives. CVH Groomer Earns Honorable Mention In National Show
Countryside groomer, Kim Yoder, entered the Intergroom 2010 International Grooming Show in New Jersey in April. Kim and Cheryl, both groomers at CVH, attended many of the grooming seminars over the weekend as well. Kim's little buddy, a bichon that is regularly groomed by Kim at Countryside, was a great sport at the event, and made Kim proud. Kim describes that when she arrived at the event, the evening before the competition, that all contestants were required to wash their dogs and begin initial prep work. Due to some traveling difficulties that day, she arrived late for the washing portion of the event. By the time she arrived, the facility ran out of hot water. While she waited as they tried to fix the water situation, the water ran out. Since dogs are not allowed to be bathed in the hotel tubs she began to panic, when just then, another contestant who felt badly for her plight and had her own trailer at the event, invited Kim to groom her dog in her trailer. Her little competition companion got to have a nice warm, pleasant bathing experience and all was well. In the event, Kim did an amazing job on her dog. When it came time for the judging, the judges had a very difficult time deciding between 3rd place and Honorable Mention (4the place). In the end, Kim was awarded honorable mention for her hard work.
Kim says that every competition teaches her more and more what the judges are looking for. This year she came so very close to breaking into the top 3. Look out next year, because she is excited, inspired, ready and up for the challenge. Kim may be entering a competition in the fall of 2010. We'll keep you posted.
Check out photos of some of Kim's grooming work on Countryside's Facebook Fan Page! |
